Our Library

In the publicly accessible library of the Bavarian State Coin Collection, you may find abundant literature on coins, medals, paper money and token money, gems and seals. With over 35,000 titles, it is regarded as one of the most important establishments of its kind in the German-speaking world.

The collection, the origins of which date back to the 16th century, experienced substantial growth due to the amalgamation of the Munich and the Palatinate inventories (1777) and to the secularisation of the Bavarian monasteries (1803), but also heavy losses in the Second World War. Besides academic numismatic publications, major focus is placed on the catalogues of the coin trade. One particular feature are the minting ordinances intended for public display, showing the currency in circulation at the time in the form of engravings.

The associated archive stores among other things the written legacies of earlier directors and curators such as Franz Streber (1806–1864) and Heinrich Buchenau (1862–1931).

Opening times
Monday–Thursday • 9.00 a.m.– 4.00 p.m.
Friday • 9.00 a.m. – 2.00 p.m.

Our Publications

The Bavarian State Coin Collection regularly publishes exhibition and collection catalogues on various topics relating to numismatics and gemmology. These range from pre-coin commodity money up to the Euro coinage of today.

One main focus is the presentation of ancient Greek coins in the publication series “Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum”.  The monumental volumes of the “Deutschen Schaumünzen des XVI. Jahrhunderts” (1929–1934) (German Medals of the Early 16th Century) by the former director of the collection Georg Habich (1868–1932) represent an indispensable work of reference to this day.  The “Jahrbuch für Numismatik und Geldgeschichte” (Annual of Numismatics and Monetary History) has been published as a periodical in collaboration with the Bavarian Numismatic Society since 1949, thus continuing the tradition of the “Mitteilungen” (Transactions), which were founded in 1881, and is regarded as the most important journal of this specialist field in Germany.

You may purchase recent publications from us at any time. Just come by or send us a message. We will be happy to send you the book you require.
