Er war eine Identifikationsfigur der Arbeiterbewegung und forderte die Schaffung einer Republik. In Frankfurt wurde er 1848 zum Vizepräsidenten des Vorparlaments gewählt. Als die Nachrichten vom Aufstand in Wien im Oktober eintrafen, reiste er dorthin, hielt Reden und beteiligte sich an der Verteidigung Wiens gegen die anrückenden kaiserlichen Truppen. Nach dem Fall Wiens wurde Blum dort unter Missachtung seiner Abgeordnetenimmunität inhaftiert und gerichtlich zum Tode verurteilt. Am 9.
